IBME Retreat
A day of research exchange, cross-disciplinary discussion and collaborative planning for the biomedical engineering community.
About the retreat
The IBME Retreat brings the research community together around a shared question: how can engineering ideas address meaningful challenges in healthcare? The programme combines short research presentations with discussion sessions that encourage participants to look beyond their own specialism. It offers space to exchange methods, compare perspectives and develop new research connections.
Morning: research perspectives
The opening session introduces the institute’s research themes, followed by short talks on robotics and devices, medical imaging, nanoscale sensing and wearable technologies. Presenters describe the question behind their work, the approach being explored and the technical challenges that would benefit from input from another discipline. Discussion time is built into each session.
Afternoon: connecting ideas
The afternoon focuses on small-group conversations. Participants can discuss shared measurement challenges, opportunities for collaboration and the steps needed to take a concept into a more developed research project. A closing session brings together the main themes and identifies topics for follow-up conversations.
Who should attend
The programme is intended for researchers, research students and collaborators interested in biomedical engineering. Participants are encouraged to bring a research question, a practical challenge or an idea they would like to discuss. Short introductions should be accessible to people from engineering, science and clinical backgrounds.
